Private Label Clothing: A Complete Guide for New Brands

Private Label Clothing: A Complete Guide for New Brands

The private label clothing market has exploded in recent years, driven by e-commerce growth, direct-to-consumer brands, and consumers' appetite for unique, well-crafted fashion. If you're considering launching your own clothing line, private label manufacturing is the most efficient path from concept to market.

What Exactly Is Private Label Manufacturing?

Private label manufacturing is a business model where a factory produces garments entirely according to your specifications — your designs, your fabrics, your labels, your packaging. The end customer sees only your brand; the manufacturer remains behind the scenes.

This differs from white-label products (generic items you simply rebrand) and custom manufacturing (where you own the patterns and molds). Private label sits in the sweet spot: full brand control without the massive investment of owning a factory.

Step 1: Define Your Brand DNA

Before contacting any manufacturer, invest serious time in defining your brand. This includes your target customer profile and price positioning, your brand aesthetic and design language, your core product categories (womenswear, menswear, children's, sportswear), your quality expectations and material preferences, and your sustainability commitments.

Create detailed mood boards, sketch initial designs, and develop a clear brand guidelines document. The more specific you are, the better your manufacturer can execute your vision.

Step 2: Prepare Your Tech Packs

A tech pack is the blueprint for your garment. It should include flat sketches with front, back, and detail views; a complete bill of materials (fabric, trims, labels, buttons, zippers); detailed measurements for each size; construction notes and stitch specifications; and color references (Pantone codes preferred).

If you don't have tech pack experience, many manufacturers including Orkon Tekstil can help develop tech packs from your sketches or reference images.

Step 3: Find the Right Manufacturing Partner

This is the most critical decision. Consider specialization in your product category, minimum order quantities that match your budget, communication quality and responsiveness, certifications like OEKO-TEX and ISO, production capacity and lead times, and geographic location for logistics.

Request samples from at least 3 manufacturers before making your decision. Quality of samples is the most reliable predictor of production quality.

Step 4: Sampling and Development

The sampling phase typically involves a first prototype (7-10 days) based on your tech pack, fit review and adjustment notes, a second sample incorporating your feedback, pre-production sample for final approval, and size set samples for grading verification.

Never rush sampling. This phase prevents expensive mistakes during bulk production. At Orkon Tekstil, we offer unlimited revision rounds because getting the sample perfect is in everyone's interest.

Step 5: Bulk Production

Once you approve the pre-production sample, manufacturing begins. Key things to monitor during production include fabric and trim sourcing confirmation, cutting approval (first bundle check), in-line quality inspection at 30% and 60% completion, and final inspection at 100% completion.

Production timelines typically range from 15-30 days depending on order volume, fabric availability, and garment complexity. Your manufacturer should provide regular photo updates and progress reports.

Step 6: Quality Control and Shipping

Professional QC follows the AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) standard. Each garment is inspected for measurement accuracy, stitch quality and consistency, fabric defects, color matching, label placement, and pressing and finishing.

After passing final inspection, garments are packed according to your specifications — individual polybags, hangers, branded boxes, or bulk packing — and shipped via your preferred method (FOB, CIF, or DDP).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

From our experience working with dozens of new brands, the most common mistakes include skipping the sampling phase to save time, choosing the cheapest manufacturer over the best fit, not having clear tech packs, ordering too much inventory for a first collection, and ignoring import duties and logistics costs in pricing.
